G. A. Membré is a freelance musician working in various genres and venues around the Mpls/St. Paul area. Most notably, he has appeared at the Dakota Club and Cedar Cultral Center. He has been featured on the Jazz Image with Leigh Kamman, the Minnesota Connection, the morning show on MPR and appeared several time on KBEM.
G. A. has worked in several areas of the music business. He has served as music director in church music since 1999. Has worked as music director in various theatrical productions, and composed scores for films.
He is leader, arranger and pianist for the jazz group The Ellington Project and is also the leader, arranger and guitarist in the gypsy jazz group, The Manouche Jazz Hot Club. Gregory produced a CD with the Ellington Project called All Night in 2002. In 1986 G. A. won runner up in the International Recording competition for his recording of the Mozart Sonata KV 533 u. 494. He is also an active performer with the classical organization Thursday Musical.
G. A. studied classical piano first with Carolyn Britton at the University of Wisconsin and then at the University of Minnesota with the late Paul Freed. He has, also, had the opportunity to study the oud (an Arabic lute) with Sakher Hattar and Simon Shaheen and jazz guitar privately with Denis Chang and Yaakov Hoter.
G. A. has taught music privately since 1975. He teaches classical, jazz, blues and popular piano; jazz, rock and blues guitar; oud (an Arabic lute) and Irish whistles. His main aim in teaching is to instill a passion and love for music making on any level. He feels strongly that playing music should be a fun experience along with learning good technique.
